Schools in London have embraced teachers from all over the world. Cultural enrichment and fresh ideas are welcomed with open arms. If you are new to London and have qualified in a different country, of course things will be different. Isn’t moving to London all about embracing and enjoying the differences? Supply teaching enables teachers that are new to the UK to appreciate the exposure they gain to the new curriculum, new school policies and new teaching ideas and techniques.

The most flexible option is to commit to work on a daily basis. On these assignments you will be covering teachers that are absent from work either because they are ill or committed to training courses on these days. This type of work will allow you exposure to a variety of schools and locations.
This is still a supply role where you have a very similar amount of flexibility to short term supply. As you know with supply things can change very quickly and the main difference is that you are committing to doing supply work at the same school for a set duration of time. You will be given similar responsibilities to a permanent member of staff and you are likely to be working with classes that you specialise in. For example, if you are a primary teacher you will be working with an age group that you are confident with. Long term supply can be a very rewarding role as you make a greater contribution to curriculum planning and get involved in the school community as a whole. Schools will often select staff for long term roles based on their CV and interview or supply trial day feedback. Updating your CV with your short term supply work is very helpful for schools to get a better understanding of your experience.
Thames Teachers often places long term supply teachers that are then offered permanent contracts by the school they are working with. This is completely your choice – some teachers prefer long term supply and some prefer permanent assignments. It’s a personal choice with Pro’s and Con’s for both and your preference will largely depend on your own personal plans, commitment and career aspirations. Thames Teachers is also able to place teachers into immediate permanent roles. The majority of these opportunities start in September, with some in January too. You will need to apply well in advance for these roles in order to be considered before the schools short-listing process is completed.
Intervention and Tuition
There is a huge demand in London schools for additional learning support assistants and teachers who are able to help raise academic standards and also address particular learning difficulties through either one-to-one or small group work. This can be very rewarding work as you will be able to work intensively with select students and play an integral part in their progress.
